Truemors - Powered By Wordpress
Probably the most interesting thing I’ve heard about Truemors is that it’s built on Wordpress.
It’s easy to see how the scalability and ease of modification that exists with Wordpress would attract such a high profile startup.
After poking around a bit I’ve noticed they are using some modified plugins as well. Notably WP-PostRatings (for voting) and Share This (for social bookmarking).
One area where they’ve dropped the ball is search engine optimization. Something as simple as permalinks hasn’t been implemented and their post titles aren’t optimal either. Truemors isn’t going to struggle for traffic but I’m rather pedantic when it comes to the small things.
If by some chance you haven’t heard about Truemors it’s a new startup engineered by Guy Kawasaki. It’s an odd mashup of Twitter and Digg, where users send in rumours or popular news, which can then be voted on or discussed.
I’m not sure what to make of it at the moment. Everyone was quick to attack the concept behind Twitter and look how that turned out.

I dunno…vicious rumors? Seems like idle talk and a waste of time.
I read the TechCrunch piece and have to side with them.

i had a lil hint when i saw the site….. i now know i was true

I looked it over, too. Don’t think I will spend any time there. Better things to do.
Not sour grapes, just think we are getting saturated with all these high concept sites that have little value.
I have little time to deal with real issues, let alone searching for rumors.

Yeah, I first noticed it as well after looking at the code and I was like, Wooaahh!!! Web startups are being built on WP now?!

It explains the fast turnaround on this project.

Yet another Web 2.0 flash in the pan. It’s demise will not be grieved.
And, Dan, in case you haven’t heard, Twitter is *so* last Thursday…

Twitter is not very much fun to look at. The type and graphics remind me of a blue version of MBL.

Well, I’m sure they’ll be able to grow away from their short comings in time.
I think Wordpress is pretty good software.
Quite a few larger sites seems to use it these days

I think we’ll see a lot of companies using more out of the box type of solutions, rather than going with all custom built.
I like wordpress, it’s a good solution for many sites.

I’m all for Wordpress, but I think at times you just need to go with a custom solution. Otherwise you will probably end up compromising some part of your site/service.

I actually like the look of the site and in my view, using WordPress is the best thing they could have done. Why would you want to use clunky websites that are hard to navigate and difficult to find information.
Using the post teaser plugin and having a number of posts on the front page makes it appealing since people are not greeted with a boring static page all about the site.

I hate that wordpress makes you pay to customize. LONG LIVE BLOGGER!

I don’t think it’s a site I would visit, but there are a lot of people sitting at work that visit joke sites & fake news sites. So maybe they will make money.

I love wordpress. Period.

That’s neat that it was built by Wordpress, but I just don’t see any value in sites like these. They are such a waste of time and they don’t even have the features of the social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. I can’t see myself ever getting into this type of stuff.

Infact wordpress has made it easy to get the thing from sigle portal.

Wordpress is a fast-rising blogging site, if not, one of the better blogging sites. I can’t believe after years they are able to add many features to their interface.

The only reason this might work is Guy Kawasaki’s name being attached to it. The whole idea depends on being able to generate useful and interesting rumors. There are only a handful of people in position to hear things like that and he’d have to have a bunch of them posting to the site. Is there really a large enough supply of true rumors that are interesting to make this feasible?
If there is little control on the site, it’s just going to degenerate into a rumor mill and the signal to noise ratio will plummet.

It could work. I am not going to rush to judge just yet. But it sounds like a program I wrote called “rumora” a few years ago and I was in Entrepreneur Magazine for it. I never open sourced it or sold it because it was too unstable.

I had not heard of truemors, or Guy’s involvement until I read this post, and I see the site in the top 100,000.
Thanks for letting me know!
April 17th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Wordpress is the best blogging software one could use and overall the look and feel of the site is appealing too.
There are fair chances that the site should do well & add up to be another best to the popular social bookmarking sites that one uses today. Let’s wait & watch.

Wordpress is indeed a great blogging software. It can be customized in any way. There are plenty of plugins available on the web which make it easy to use and flooded with functionalities.
