This Blog Has Been Reborn
As you may have noticed I’ve got the new design up and running.
I would have liked to do a bit more testing before I let it out into the wild but I’ve already wasted too much time when I could be doing more productive things.
If you notice anything broken please leave a comment or drop me an email. I’ve tested it with Firefox and Internet Explorer and didn’t find any problems but I’m sure there are some lurking about. One thing that is missing is the avatars next to comments. I am going to put them back in but I want to integrate them properly into the design instead of just quickly tossing in the code.
Let me know what you think. Even if you hate it.
It’s still a work in progress so I’m open to making a few changes.

Very nice setup. Great content too. Thanks for visiting my site.

Dan, I liked the previous theme and layout much than the current one. The current title and description is well written. Just think about the layout..
April 19th, 2007 at 8:33 am
Thanks Barry.
Benedict - I really liked the old theme but I wanted something a bit more polished. Whilst the other theme was nice it was a little bit too minimalistic.

I like this design better. Very clean. I think you got a winner.

Hey! I’m feeling so trendy and fresh commenting here! Nice overhaul, and I like the header very much, fits your style!
April 19th, 2007 at 11:42 am
Thanks guys. Now that I’ve got the redesign out of the way I can knuckle down and start pumping out some nice articles.

Very nice Dan. Great clean fresh feel to the place.
One thing I don’t like is the lack of padding to the left of the whole thing, it may just be me, but I don’t like reading up against the side of the window/screen.
Apart from that, I really like the alignment of everything else and the titles in the sidebars too.
April 19th, 2007 at 11:56 am
Thats for the feedback Phil. Can you explain a little more about the padding? What resolution are you running?
April 19th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
I’m running on 1024×768 with Firefox maximised and this is what your posts look like to me:
http://philnash.googlepages.com/wrong.gif
I added the black line down the right to signify the edge of the screen/window for me. It all just seems a bit close to me. Your comments are better, they have a bit of extra padding, but it makes the post hard to read.

I see now. I didn’t realise how tight a fit it would be with a width of 1000.
I run a desktop resolution of 1280×1024 so I don’t get that.
I think I’ll make the sidebar columns a little narrower to create a little more padding for anyone using a lower resolution.
Thanks for pointing that out Phil.

Ah, that makes sense.
Glad I could be of service!
April 19th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
Dan,
Though most people are probably running 1024×768 or higher thesedays, it’s not uncommon to develop to 800×600 or, ideally, use divs and css or liquid tables that can stretch/shrink. That’s what we do in my company.
The template is nice looking. Gives you lots of space to play in.

Very nice clean design! Congrats on the new home
April 19th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
Sprague - I don’t think I could possibly squeeze the width anywhere near 800. I need the main content column to be 500px, so that leaves me 300px for 2 sidebar columns. I’d be pushing it.
The only way to do it would be to go back to a single column sidebar.
I might have a look at it tomorrow.

Thanks Man of Silver. It’s like buying a new car.
April 19th, 2007 at 2:32 pm
Hey Dan
Consider providing some more whitespace on the left margin. Easier on the eyes.
April 19th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
I’m also running 1024X768 and noticed the zero space between the edge and the beginning of the writing on the left, i.e., the no padding. That’s a little disconcerting but everything else is beautiful and much nicer than before.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:27 pm
i’m 1280X1024 on firefox and all’s good here matey.
April 19th, 2007 at 7:48 pm
I really like the new layout - very clean and legible.
Did you hand code it or base it on an existing layout?
April 20th, 2007 at 12:48 am
Ok I’ve cut the width down to 950px, so there should be an extra 25px of breathing space on either side now.
Hopefully this is an improvement for everyone using 1024×768.
Rob - The theme is based on Pressrow but I’ve done alot of hand coding to get things the way I want it.
Thanks again for the feedback everyone.

Oh much nicer!
Now I can say that it’s a great redesign!
April 20th, 2007 at 1:22 am
This theme is very nice, I really like how the social site things have been integrated, along with the tags and subscribe box.
Looks really nice, nice new header as well.

I’ve heard a lot about Firefox. What’s your impression of it so far? Can I have two browsers on my system at the same time so I can flip back and forth between Explorer and Firefox in case I need to fine tune my blog for both?
April 20th, 2007 at 8:58 am
Martin - Firefox is great. I would choose it over Internet Explorer every time.
You can have both browsers running at the same time and its a good idea exactly for the reason you bring up. You should always check that your blog design is being displayed properly in both Firefox and Internet Explorer.
April 20th, 2007 at 8:58 am
Interesting, Martin, that you should mention Firefox. I had been using it steadily for many months, but found yesterday that it had been giving me much trouble logging into statcounter. I switched to IE7 and no problem. In addition, the “blocking cookie” worked and it never had under Firefox. However, these effects may just be peculiar to me: my peculiarity which proper tuning could correct.

Hey -
Did you use a template for this redesign? The only reason that I ask is your site looks VERY similar to http://blog.writewith.com/ . Just curious.
-Nick

Nick - The theme is based on Pressrow. It’s probably the best coded theme I’ve come across. Very clean and easy to modify. Looks like those guys are using it as well.

The design is good and content too. I found your design perfect for bloggers: clear and simple.
Congratulations!

I like the design Dan . Looks clean and simple .

Looks good. Although I thought you previous design was good also.
April 21st, 2007 at 12:28 pm
I can’t remember your previous design but I really like this one.

[…] now and then I’ll see Dan from the Wrong Advices here on MsDanielle. I noticed today that he redid his site. It looks great, Dan! And the layout of the posts sort of reminds me of Search Engine Roundtable, […]

Hey Dan! awesome job on the redesign, the pressrow theme definitely suits your blog, and you did some really nice changes to the default version! Love it! keep it up
April 23rd, 2007 at 7:18 pm
Hey, Dan! The site looks GREAT! I really like it alot.
April 29th, 2007 at 6:26 pm
Looks great and I definitely think the added margins help as well. Any thoughts on releasing it into the wild?
April 29th, 2007 at 11:10 pm
Rob - If anyone’s interested I’d love to. I was going to release a 3-column version of Pressrow anyway but I’m just going to check with the original themes author to make sure he’s licenced it the way I think he has.
May 4th, 2007 at 9:43 am
Love the big fonts
May 5th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
Please release this 3-column version. I love Pressrow but need a third column for ads. How do I create a second sidebar? Thanks,
Ed
