Wordpress Plugin: Link Love

I found this plugin while browsing Andy Beard’s blog. He is a big supporter of the dofollow movement. I’m not quite sold on it yet but Andy’s passion is slowly winning me over.

Link Love is a nice middle ground for people who are cautious of completely removing nofollow, but who want to encourage commenting and reward those who do make the effort to contribute.

With Link Love you can set a comment threshold (default is 10), and once a user reaches that threshold the nofollow tag will be removed from their comments.

  • It seems to me that this should work the other way around; give a commenter link love, but after a certain point stop doing so.

It seems to me that you want people to be commenting because they want to comment, not so that they can increase their own rankings.

I think rewarding someone with a link is a good idea, but deciding to hold it back until they post X number of comments is just going to encourage people who don’t really want to comment to do so just to get something out of it.

“Just 3 more comments and then I can increase my rankings! Woohoo!”

I for one enjoy people commenting, but would feel really dirty about doing this sort of thing

  • Jer - I understand where you’re coming from. I had exactly the same thoughts before installing the top commentators plugin.

The way I see it though is not as an incentive but as a reward. The people who are in it just for a linkback will come and go, but your regulars will keep coming back, continue commenting, and they are the ones you’d install something like this for.

The other thing to consider is you don’t have to tell people you’ve installed it. Your regulars will hit the threshold soon enough and start getting some link love while the one-stoppers won’t ever know about it.

  • I love that plugin and have been using it on my site for some time now.

  • Dan, you have got the point. That’s why I never had a post telling there is link love in my blog for commenting! It never helped me in getting more comments but got me genuine comments and they are the one who will enjoy the link love :-).
