Open Comments - 31st March 2007

This is a new thing I’m going to be doing every Saturday.

I’m going to leave the comments open for you to talk about anything you like.

If you’ve found something interesting on the web, if you have a question you want answered, or maybe you just want to vent. This is the place to do it. I’m leaving it up to you.

The following day I’ll do a write up of the highlights.

Just keep in mind these simple rules:

  • Don’t write anything offensive.
  • Don’t spam.
  • Keep it interesting and have fun.

Update - 1st April 2007:
Thanks to Bri and David for helping out with Marde’s RSS problem. Good work guys.

  • I can’t set up the feedburner icons on my blog. I have an account on feedburner, and I burned feeds for my posts and comments and put them in my Bookmarks Toolbar Folder. But here’s what happens when I go to the Blogs page on www.feedburner.com after logging in. About half way down this page are listed many services under Publicize. These services include the ones I think I want, namely, Email Subscription, Chicklet Chooser, and FeedCount. BUT, NONE OF THEM ARE CLICKABLE.

OK, there’s is something obvious I’m not doing, but I’ve been poking around in the feedburner website and can’t seem to get anywhere. Incidentally, I had downloaded the ol_feedburner_2.2 file, placed it in my plugins directory, activated it, and burned two feeds as I mentioned above. I’m perplexed. I know there must be something overwhelmingly obvious I’m not doing, but what is it? perplexed perplexed….

  • Hey Marde. When you click on the Publicize tab the selections on the left hand side under “Services” should be clickable. You need to go into each of the ones you want to use and click the activate button.

I went to your site and the feedburner feed is active so that’s good at least.

Are you sure the options on the left sidebar are not accessable?

  • I just updated my account on Feedburner and went again to the Blogs page but still none of those things under Publicize are clickable, including Publicize itself. Beats me. I sent them a feedback.

When I say “are not clickable” I mean when I hold my mouse over the words, nothing happens, and when I click nothing happens. There are just no live links on those words, at least for me.

  • mard, i guess mostly you want to put an icon which can be viewed and visitor to click on it to subscribe. Correct me if i’m wrong.

mard, you can follow the step below :

    1. upload the feed icon to your server, place it maybe at the images directory.
    2. if you know a little coding, find your templates location. If you want the image of feed on the sidebar, you should look for sidebar.php which is also similar to where you place your flikr photo’s code.
    3. copy and paste the following code :

    <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/[yourfeedname]" title="Subscribe to my feed" rel="nofollow"><img src="[path to your feed icon]" rel="nofollow"></a>

Just replace the yourfeedname to yours feed real name. About the icon feeds that you have downloaded and upload to your server images directory, you can change the above img src equal to the location of the feeds icon.

    Hope this would help.

Sorry dan, just want to help out here too. :) And Dan, nice post. I am sure more would love to comment here.

  • Hey Marde, I think I found your problem, though tell me if I’m wrong. You say you go to the blogs page after logging in, correct? Then there is a list of non-clickable items and services that feedburner provides?

I think that the problem is that you are looking at the page that shows people who are wondering what feedburner can do for them. What you want to do is click on the “My Feeds” link next to the house all the way on the top left - above the Feedburner icon.

This will bring you to the “My Feeds” page. So, the title in the browser should be “My Feeds.” From there, you will find a link with your website or feed name. Click on that and you will be brought to a page that is titles “Analyze :: Feed Stats Dashboard.” Here you can play around and set up your feeds - there will be clickable tabs titled “Analyze,” “Optimize,” “Publicize,” “Monetize,” and my personal favorite, “Troubleshootize.” The important thing is that you see the “Troubleshootize” tab. Otherwise you are in the wrong place.

Sorry for the long long long comment, I just wanted to be clear. It sounded like you are on the page that describes the service to potential users. If this isn’t it, write back.

  • I don’t know about you, but I keep getting these emails about “Day Job Killer”. There’s so much hype about it and was wondering if anybody has bought the book or has tried the techniques mentioned in it.

  • Thanks Bri! That did it. I’m there. Everything now lives, even the “Troubleshootizeâ€? tab. With a word like that, how can you go wrong?

Thanks very very much, and of course I feel stupid. Feel stupid? Silly question. I AM stupid. I’ll just let it go at that and grab a glass of beer.
    Drown the sorrow, ya know!

    And thanks again.

  • Hey Marde, no problem. The “My Feeds” link is a little inconspicuous. It’s an understandable mistake - the Feedburner homepage is very targeted at potential users, not really new users.

  • Great work Bri. A bit of lateral thinking goes a long way.

Hope you’ve got it all going now Marde.

Maria I’m going to have a look into this “Day Job Killer”. It sounds like another e-book to me and I’m generally very suspicious of them. I’ll see what I can dig up.

David that’s some good advice to someone trying to set up their feedburner feed. For some reason the code tag isn’t working but I’ll try and get it fixed.

  • It was a piece of cake. I simply copied the code into a Text Widget and placed it at the top of my first sidebar. Then I adjusted the color of the Feedburner readers icon to match the theme. And I’ve got one reader so far. Must be me!

But doing it this way I guess I’m confined to Google for display. It won’t let me choose any of the newsreaders discussed in another post here, Dan. Clearly, there’s more understanding I need here and I’m missing something. More to think about and learn.

  • Mard people usually copy and paste the feed address into whatever they are using as a feed reader. You can setup more icons for the different readers and services people use but personally I don’t think it’s necessary.
