Amazon Announces Context Links Beta

Amazon has thrown their hat into the contextual advertising ring with the announcement of their Context Links Beta program. Unlike Kontera however it is not a pay-per-click program, but rather an extension of Amazon’s existing affiliate program.

From Amazon’s site:

“Context Links are a quick and convenient way to add links to your website and monetize your content. Context Links automatically identify and link relevant phrases within your page content to Amazon products, unlocking new ad inventory and saving you the time from having to manually create links.  You can add the links to your pages in minutes, and we provide a wealth of options to customize how they are displayed.”

So now instead of building a link for each product you want to promote you can let Amazon do all the work. This could be a real time saver.

You can see some of Amazon’s context links in action at these two sites.

  • I was just reading the newsletter from Amazon about this no more than ten minutes ago. I may give it a try and see how it goes. It’s nice that you can specify a max number of links per page. Too many could probably end up annoying the heck out of readers.

  • Two or three links is the max I’d do on a page. I don’t think readers have the same tolerance for these sorts of ads as they do for adsense.

  • I saw this today, too and immediately decided to try it out (after some research and determining that it isn’t against Adsense TOS). It is so easy to implement. I implemented it on two of my more consumer focused blogs and was very impressed by the quality of links it generated.

Only time will tell if it is a good thing or not. I think a lot will have to do with the type of content on your site (of course).

  • “I don’t think readers have the same tolerance for these sorts of ads as they do for adsense”.

I don’t think they have tolerance for any ads at all. The Amazon links are in the body of the post which I think will only be a bigger turn off. Time will tell but I have strong doubts.

  • Along these same lines, Google is now offering inline adsense links. There’s already some pushback by those who want to see a clear distinction between “editorial” and advertising. I notice some of the links on the example sites are kinda dodgy (a mention of International Business Machines leads to a link to a paper on carbon nanotubes from Amazon that has nothing to do with his post…)

For it to work, Amazon will have to be even better than Google Adsense at guessing the context of the link. Not easy.

  • I tried it for a while and just removed them today actually…. I wasn’t making any money from it and rarely were the ads relevant to either the content or the word the were linked off from.

The final straw was that the script was causing my pages to load slowly - overall it was just an annoyance to my readers if anything.
