Battered Firefox Syndrome

I reached a new level of stupidity with Firefox today. I had a heap of windows and tabs open, and my computer was running like a dog so I thought I’d open up Task Manager and see what was going on.

See for yourself.

It’s a testament to Firefox’s abilities for it to take this sort of abuse and not crash. Don’t get me wrong Firefox does junk itself from time to time, but compared to the problems I used to have with Internet Explorer they are only minor incidents.

  • You’re quite right about Firefox being able to handle a fair amount of abuse. I quite often have ten or more tabs open flipping between sites with no issues. The other day I quite spontaneously tested the ability of Firefox to see how many tabs it could open with websites loaded in each before it either crashed or everything froze. It did a pretty good job and got up to 496 before it conked off. I wonder if it would have kept going if Nero wasn’t open and I hadn’t been burning a movie at the time.

  • Dan, you have to look out for some tips to optimize the Firefox… It will save you little memory ;-)

  • I still use IE…it’s and addiction. Just letting you know I stop by daily to read The Wrong Advices. Keep posting bro!

  • I am also an IE fan . Still memory is not a big factor for me as i dont open more than 2-3 tabs at a time .

  • Isn’t Firefox just a memory whore!

Usually when things like this happen, use Firefox’s (or is it an extension’s) Restart feature to restart Firefox without losing your open tabs. The high memory usage is largely due to memory leaks from various extensions you have installed. Restarting Firefox this way will force it to drop off all leaked memory and start fresh.

  • Heh I remember when I used Netscape, if it got to 300,000K plus things would already be in slow motion. Good thing I switched to Firefox. Much much more stable too.

  • As a Mac user, I have a limited number of choices for browsers.
Firefox is my first choice. It loads fast and has lots of cool widgets.
Safari came with the computer and I use it from time to time.
Explorer is on my Mac, but loads too slow. This is a common complaint about IE7 which Microsoft won’t deal with.
    Firefox just works.
