Attention Comment Whores
The Top Commentators plugin has now been installed.
I actually thought quite a bit about whether or not to install this plugin. It has helped a lot of people increase the amount of comments made on their blog but the quality hasn’t always followed suite.
The comments that people have left on this blog so far have all been of a high quality and were offered without incentive, and that’s the main reason I’ve installed this plugin.
I think it’s better to look at it not as an incentive to comment, but as a reward for commenting. The difference is subtle and in the end probably makes no difference but that’s how I’m choosing to look at it.

I tend to agree with you on this. For example, I look at my comments at johnchow.com as an experiment but it would end soon. I called it rank chaser. In the long run, no one, at least for people like me that have a lot of others thing to do to keep doing that. My aim at blogging is simple. It catches and then records all my random thoughts and at the same time I also learn the tricks so one day I can make the blog self sufficient from the SEO income and support all my other charity works. I could also tell others how to do it when they come to me asking for money.

I tend not to get too many comments, and I think I know why.
Much of my writing is sort of self-contained and I imagine people think that my missives warrant no follow-up or discussion .. which isn’t the case!
Note to self: loosen up the sign-off and use more question marks at the end…

I find that installing top commentators on my blog greatly enhanced the number of comments I was receiving and the quality is still top notch for most of the comments.

Wayne: I find if I ask questions I usually get at least a few comments. Usually.
Qwerty: That’s good to hear. Maybe I’m just being too cynical.
Tyler: Whores?

I’ve been planning on moving my ‘blog out to WordPress for an age, so I think I need to get a wiggle on.
As for the question asking thing, looking at the organic search traffic I get, most of my articles are discovered as an answer to a question in the mind of someone else.
So it does depend on the type of article, really…

What’s up bro? Installed the Top Commentators Plugin…great idea. I’ve been using this plugin for a couple weeks, and my comments have doubled (from 7 a day to about 14 a day).
You’re right about one thing though…some comments are like 4-5 words, clearly just to get another tick on their comment count. Welllll….you can always let them know that quality comments are appreciated.

Hi. Its over a year later and you are not using the Top Commentators plug in any more. May I ask what happened and why you stopped. There is much controversy in our office as to whether it will stay or be removed. Thanks.
