10 ways to improve your sleep… Or not
The following list was taken from Cracking the Sleep Code, and was originally published in The Standard newspaper in the UK.
My notes are in bold.
Ten top tips to an improved night’s sleep:
1. Take a hot bath. ***
As a heterosexual male I can not in good conscience take a bath. It goes against the code you see.
2. Stick to the same bedtime.
4am every night? If you say so, you are the expert.
3. Take a hot, milky drink.
Umm… Hot and milky you say. Not happening. See #1.
4. If you feel stressed or worried about something, write down your concerns or pen an action plan.
And in the morning you can organise a subcommitee to discuss your concerns and the feasibility of said action plan.
5. Your bed should be for “sleep and sex” and nothing else. Do not watch television in bed.
What, no masturbation?
6. Sleep in a completely dark and quiet room.
But if I’m afraid of the dark. That’s when the evil one comes for my soul!
7. Eat at regular meal times, and eat in the evening at least three hours before going to bed.
Define regular.
8. Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the afternoon or evenings.
My precious! You can’t take my precious!
9. Eat bananas (they are high in the amino acid tryptophan).
Shouldn’t this be before #3? First the banana then the hot milky drink. I think the poor girl’s a little confused.
10. Always settle any arguments before going to sleep.
With this I agree, but be sure to shower before going to bed. Knives can be messy and you don’t want to ruin the sheets.
***The BBC reports that hot baths may reduce men’s fertility.

Hi,
So true on the “blog or die” I always feel guilty when I miss a day. God forbid you go blogless for 2 or 3 days—-at that point you can feel yourself slipping off the blog wagon.
About your blog on “10 top tips…” by the Standard. They were written a little corny but I thought the premise was good. After reading your comments, I like them even more… had a certain David Letterman quality about it.

Hi Stephanie. My sleeping patterns are actually pretty messed up at the moment. I really should be trying the things on this list
I think I’ll have to visit your blog more often.

I’ve been struggling with semi-insomnia forever, last time I checked with the family doctor he actually said “Well, maybe you should just accept that you’re sleeping patterns are different from the rest of the world.”. Gives rule nr.2 a new meaning.
Nice blog you got here.

Pssh…bedtime at 4am? Rookie
I have a pretty wacky sleeping schedule as well. If I’m lucky I may start yawning around 7am or so.
The one thing I didn’t see on this list which probably outweighs all the others would be “Turn off your computer and slowly back away.”. But I just can’t. I’d miss that comforting, soothing whir provided by my six dusty case fans…and besides I can’t blog while I’m sleeping.
